I'm thinking of doing the Heritage Trail starting at Pechey Rd at 8am. Also thinking Sunday might be better than Saturday. Let me know your thoughts and preferences ASAP.

2010 Busselton Iron Man - Sunday December 5

We, (Andrea, my father and I) spent an enjoyable weekend in Busselton and watched the 2010 Busselton IronMan on Sunday. The weather felt like all seasons in one day ranging from mild, still and ideal to cold, rainy and windy then to hot and humid.

The ironman was brilliantly organised and was great to watch with the run course including the main street and the finishing point also on the main street. This time the Iron Man was organised by the actual IronMan organisation and this resulted in a strong American influence in the commentary as well as a web site showing results in miles and miles per hour instead of kilometres.

My son, Dave, put in a great effort doing the 3.8 km swim, 180 km ride and 42 km run in a total of 9 hours 34 minutes. It was an awesome effort and I was one very proud and emotional father seeing him cross the finishing line. Click here for Dave's times

Our friend, my neice's husband, Michael Rees also did very well Click here for Michael's times.

John Berkin, who joined us on Life Cycle for CanTeen this year was also a competitor. You can see John's times and search for other competitors Click here to search other results

It was absoulutely amazing to watch such a big field of competitors (over 1,300 competitors) put in such an effort.

Gutsy Kittler keen to show he's a good bet - (for the Pool room)

This article featuring our very own Paul Kittler appeared in the now defunct Western Mail in August 1987.

CHUN across Australia ....One for the Pool Room

I've got three great kids and I'm proud of all of them. They're all great in their different ways..but my son, Dave, has got some amazing sporting and physical achievements under his belt as this article which appeared (starting) on the front page of the North West Telegraph of July 2, 2003 tells us. Click on the images to see the larger version.

Dave had always used his bike as his main form of transport as a kid and still does. He did his first "big" ride from Perth to Sydney the year he turned 18 (2001) and by sheer coincidence I ended up going to Sydney for a business conference so we ended up doing the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb together to celebrate his birthday.

For a few years, every year he would take a few weeks off and complete another part of his journey around Australia. His biggest ride involved the complete distance between Perth and Brisbane via Darwin. Click here for a detailed log of the Perth to Brisbane ride.

Have an interesting story, a great photograph or a bit of worthwhile history you're proud of?
Then why not give us an article for the "Pool Room"?

Spring Cycle Challenge and Glamour Push

The free 6 week challenge encourages people to ride more often and mentor others to ride as well.  We are particularly wanting more people from health related areas and universities to be involved this year.  Active transport has many benefits but with over a million bikes in WA there are still many that need cobwebs dusted off and tyres pumped up. Support the growth in active transport and healthy behaviour change in your workplace and local community by joining in. While cycling to work is the overall aim, you do not need to do this.  Just start cycling and replace short trips when you can.
Bikewest staff are encouraging people to do just that and providing great merchandise and tips to help you cycle instead more often.  We are endeavouring to introduce a more European Cycle Chic style to cycling. Please look at the websites below for more details.
Spring into spring and get active
Spring is nearly here and it's the perfect time to get back on your bike.
A free, fun way to do that is to join the Cycle Instead Bike to Work Challenge 2010, from 6 September to 17 October. You could win some great prizes and giveaways.
Join an existing team or register your own. A new online function 'invite friends' allows you to invite friends, neighbours and work colleagues to join your team at any time during the challenge. Register now - there are early bird prizes available for 20 lucky people.
For a list of events to be held during spring visit the Cycle Instead in Spring web page.
Glamour Push 2010 - Accessorise!
Women are very much under-represented in cycling, yet there is such a potential to incorporate cycling into their everyday activities.

Glam it up when you ride to work, your local café, or on an inspiring scenic route! Register for the Challenge and make the kilometres count. For inspiration visit
the Glamour Push challenge page and look at the Cycle Chic links.  Women can join the Bike to Work Challenge for a chance to win a Kronan bike and other major prizes and giveaways.
The Bikewest team thanks all the glamorous women who took part in last year's challenge, contributing to an increase of 4% in the Bike to Work Challenge women's category.
Kind regards

Ride style: Social
Ride type: Mountain Bike - non technical

We'll do the easy mountain bike ride on the Heritage Trail. We'll take the track North of Great Eastern Highway up to Sawyers Valley. This a fairly easy, steady climb. Then we'll cross the highway and return on the side with a stop at Darlington for coffee / food. The return is mainly downhill and in parts quite fast.

For those of you who haven't done much mountain bike riding this is an excellent way to get accustomed to MTB rides. I'm not very confident off road (some might say I'm not that good on road either!!) but this is an enjoyable, non intimidating ride.

Saturday June 19 - Hilly Classics - Superhilly [8:30am start]

Ride Organiser: Robert Hind Robert@robert-hind.com
Organisers mobile tel: 0417 934 502
Ride style: Social
Ride type: Road
Terrain: Very Hilly
Estimated Distance: 50 kms
Start Place: Gidgegannup
Start Time: 8:30 am

It was back in October 2008 when we last did the "SuperHilly".

Gidge 'B', the so-called ATTA (Australian Time Trials Association) 'SuperHilly' course is a testing 40km and no-one has yet come close to breaking the hour. Meet at the gazebo in the car park just to the west of the Gidgegannup Shell roadhouse (on the right as you enter town from Perth) at 8:30am. While the start is on the left in Reserve Rd just prior to entering town; the finish is directly opposite the roadhouse. The biggest and toughest climb is out of the valley along O'Brien Rd from the creek crossing; it's pretty much 'up' all the way back to Toodyay Rd. Character building stuff. We usually take intermediate times at the 11km point: the turn into Clenton Rd off Berry.
Please do not park in the Shopping Centre Carpark or in the Garden Centre across the road: use the parking adjacent to the Gazebo or at the Showgrounds - off Toodyay Rd a bit past Bunning Rd. Toilet facilities are available at the western side of the Showgrounds.

There are extra loops we can add in to boost this to a 50km or 60km ride.

See the route / profile from the last time we did this.

Cycling Safety Survey

Here is an opportunity to contribute to Cycling Safety...
Monash University are conducting a Cycling Safery Survey. Monash University - Cycling Safety Survey

The aim of this study is to identify ways to improve safety for on-road cyclists by understanding the experiences of cyclists and drivers. It is anticipated that the responses will contribute to identifying the specific areas that need to be targeted to improve cyclist safety.

The survey was originally supposed to close on May 31 but I understand it is being kept open to encourage more response.

Compete without having to be in the same place at the same time!

GPS systems and web sites are continuing to combine forces and provide more information to aid your records, training or fuel the competitive spirit.
Garmin with their range of GPS models for the cyclist, athlete and tri athlete have really got the market cornered at the moment. Garmin's (PC Based) Training Manager is a useful program but when the Garmin is teamed with Garmin's recently improved Garmin Connect and the independent MapMyRide you can share the information.
Yesterday I learned of yet another web site which allows you to compare your times with friends and other riders who cover the same ground. Essentially you can compete without having to be in the same place at the same time! Take a look at http://www.strava.com/.

Saturday May 1, 2010. Heritage trail - Mountain bike ride

Ride Organiser: Robert Hind Robert@robert-hind.com
Organisers mobile tel: 0417 934 502
Ride style: Social
Ride type: Mountain Bike - non technical
Terrain: Steady Climb then Good descent
Estimated Distance: 45kms
Start Time: 8:30am
Start Point: Pechey Park (Car Park at the top of Morrison Road)

We'll do the easy mountain bike ride on the Heritage Trail. We'll take the track North of Great Eastern Highway up to Sawyers Valley. This a fairly easy, steady climb. Then we'll cross the highway and return on the side with a stop at Darlington for coffee / food. The return is mainly downhill and in parts quite fast.

For those of you who haven't done much mountain bike riding this is an excellent way to get accustomed to MTB rides. I'm not very confident off road (some might say I'm not that good on road either!!) but this is an enjoyable, non intimidating ride.

Ride style: Social
Ride type: Road
Terrain: Hills
Estimated Distance: 70-75 km loop from Narrows

I'm thinking of an early start, so the start would be at Narrows South at 7:00 am
Navigate past Burswood, through Rivervale and on to Maida Vale, then up Kalamunda Road. See the first attached link. www.mapmyride.com

Once in Kalamunda, there is an optional 19km loop down Canning Road towards Pickering brook, then back via Piesse Brook and up the hill to Kalamunda again. See the second link. www.mapmyride.com

After re-fuelling in Kalamunda, it's down Kalamunda Road at warp speed and retrace our steps back to South Perth.

Total distance would be 70-75km from the Narrows with a flat start, a flat finish and hills in the middle.

Saturday 23 Jan - multi-cafe sojourn

Ride Organiser: Terry
Organisers mobile tel: 0414 730 970
Ride style: Social
Ride type: Road
Terrain: Mostly flat
Estimated Distance: 65km from Maylands, 47km from Narrows
Start Point: Maylands Railway Station @ 7am, Narrows @ 7:30

Ken’s returning from several weeks off following injury contracted performing dangerous activities (late night shopping combined with pre-Xmas shopping) so this weekend’s ride is a littler gentler than usual. Also given the expected hot conditions, we’ll start a bit earlier.

The plan:
Leave from Maylands at 7am and the Narrows (north side) at 7:30am.
Ride through to the railway cycle path, then to Swanbourne. Stop for coffee.
Continue to Freo and then to Pt Walter and Applecross. Stop for coffee.
Head back via Como and South Perth. Final stop to be determined on the day.

Make sure you bring water!!
